Inishowen writers pen 'Earls' play 08.08.07

A NEW radio play by two Inishowen writers will hit the airwaves next month to coincide with the 400th anniversary of the Flight of the Earls.
'This Place From Where the Earls Flew', written by Martin Lynch and Mary Lorraine McHugh, will be broadcast on Inishowen Community Radio (ICRfm) on September 14th at 4pm. The pair will shortly audition male and female actors, ranging in age from 19 to 50, for a number of paid roles in the production.
The two writers recently received funding from the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland’s ‘Sound and Vision’ programme to produce the play.
The work brings a unique slant to the story of 'The Flight of the Earls' by telling the parallel story of a young couple who leave Donegal for America in 1987 due

to economic reasons and, like O’Neill and O’Donnell, never return to their homeland.
Moville-based Martin Lynch is well known as the co-author of the book ‘Inishowen Land of Eoghain’ and has taught at universities in Ireland and the US.
Mary Lorraine McHugh lives in Greencastle and has been involved in drama and the arts in Ireland and Britain. She is a former resident artist at Ruskin College, Oxford University.
"The play produces a new focus on the epic journey of the ‘Flight of the Earls’ that examines not just the historic context of the past, but also considers the impact that this historic event has had on the Ireland of 2007," they explained.
Auditions will be held at The Playhouse Theatre, located in St.Columb's Hall, Derry, on Friday, August 17th and Saturday, August 18th, between 1pm and 6pm. Male and female actors between 19 and 50 years, are urged to audition for a number of paid roles in the play. The positions are open to people with or without previous acting experience.
