Buncrana man will ‘change Donegal politics’ - McGuinness 10.04.07

Politics in Donegal will “never be the same again” after the next general election, according to Sinn Fein’s Martin McGuinness.
The North’s Deputy First Minister designate made his comments during his oration at the Easter Sunday Commemoration in Drumboe.

“The gap between the wealthy and the rest of the population is continuing to widen. The apparent apathy with which the people view politics here is the result of the failure of the political process and so, old guard politicians must accept responsibility for all of that,” said Mr. McGuinness, MP, MLA.
“Here in Donegal, two young exciting politicians, Padraig MacLochlainn and Pearse Doherty are about to change all of that. Politics in Donegal, in Ireland, will never be the same again. That is why the people in greater numbers are seeing Sinn Féin as the real alternative.”
Mr. McGuinness described the two local councillors as “excellent candidates”.
“Politically, socially and economically, Derry, Donegal and Tyrone have been deeply scarred by partition. Because of the partition of our country we have lost many close friends of the calibre of the Drumboe martyrs. “As we gather here on this Easter Sunday you can take great pride in the fact that Sinn Fein's peace strategy and increasing electoral support is directly and successfully challenging all of that,” he said, adding that Sinn Fein’s goal was to “create a United Ireland that delivers real social and economic change”.
He said Conor Murphy, as Minister of Regional Development, would oversee the construction of the proposed motorway from Dublin to Derry and Letterkenny.
“Here in Donegal you have two excellent candidates in Pearse Doherty and Padraig MacLochlainn,” he added.
“We are the party with the vision, strategy and policies to achieve Irish unity, independence and sovereignty. It is an honourable goal, it is an achievable goal and it is a just and democratic goal.”
