Shaun McGonagle hates
the term boyracers because it sends out the wrong
message about all young car lovers.
"I spent nearly €26,000 doing up my last car so I'm
hardly going to ruin it doing handbrake turns around
corners," he says, matter-of-factly.
He admits, however, that there are some
irresponsible drivers who give them all a bad name.
"The term 'boyracers' is a stereotype, a label. And
while there are some out there who terrorise the
streets, there are an awful lot who are genuinely
interested in doing up cars."
The industrious 23-year old from Ballybrack,
Greencastle, is doing more than most to help draw
the distinction between the two types of car owners.
He is running a charity car show this weekend in
Moville - Port 'n' Polish - at which he expects
hundreds of visitors and more than 60 exhibitors
from throughout Inishowen and the North West.
Proceeds will go to two causes - the Friends of Alan
Doherty, who are attempting to raise a further
€200,000 to pay for surgery for 17-year old Alan,
who was born without a chin. The other beneficiary
will be the Foyle Punt Association in Greencastle
who are reviving interest in the native Foyle Class
Punt boat and rowing on the Foyle.
Shaun, who takes up a new job shortly with a
well-known car accessories chain and who also does
freelance work for Modified Motors Magazine, says he
expects a good turn-out on the day. "There has been
a very good response so far. There seems to be a lot
of interest in it."
Port 'n' Polish takes place this Sunday, July 22nd,
2007, from 12pm to 6pm at the Glencrow Business
Park, Moville. |
