Garda chiefs back Inishowen campaign 10.04.07

The founder of Public Against Road Carnage (PARC) has welcomed the backing of senior Gardai for the campaign.
Susan Gray told InishowenNews.com she was ‘delighted’ the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors (AGSI) had supported its call for the introduction of mandatory testing for every driver involved in a road accident.
PARC founder, Susan Gray from Culdaff speaks to Mr. Ahern about mandatory breath testing for drivers involved in crashes. “This is a great endorsement of our campaign and we’re delighted,” said Ms. Gray.
“The AGSI also want drivers to be tested for drugs at the scene of all accidents.”
The senior officers backed the move at their recent annual conference.
The PARC founder spoke to the AGSI president after the motion was passed
and congratulated the organisation for its stance.
“We are just ordinary people trying to get measures introduced that will save lives on our roads,” said Inishowen-based Ms. Gray.
“But it’s important that the Garda sergeants and inspectors have now also backed the call because they will not be ignored by the Government.”
PARC understands that the AGSI is to meet shortly with the Minister for Transport, Martin Cullen and Minister for Justice, Michael McDowell to outline their demands on the issue.
“We gathered more than 20,000 signatures backing us on this so clearly the people really want mandatory testing brought it. The fact that senior Gardai have now also called for it is a great vindication of the work our members have been doing. I’m confident we will get mandatory testing introduced,” she added, vowing to continue with the campaign.
