Donegal Sinn Fein
who protested outside a Dublin auction house
yesterday to prevent the sale of an important
Padraig Pearse letter were delighted to learn it has
been bought for the people of Ireland.
The poignant missive, penned hours before his
execution, was expected to fetch up to €100,000 at
an open auction at James Adams Auctioneers.
However, prior to it going under the hammer, the
letter was bought by a wealthy anonymous benefactor
who asked for it to be donated to the National
Museum of Ireland. It is understood the buyer paid
more than €120,000 for the document.
In the letter, Pearse calmly gives instructions to
his captors where his possessions should go
including an amount of money to be given to his
mother.
Cllr. Pearse Doherty, who was among the protestors
in the capital yesterday said: "Important historical
documents should be the property of all the people
of Ireland and not sold off to the highest bidder."
