Funding of €562,500
has been allocated towards the construction of a
breakwater at Buncrana Pier.
Deputy Cecilia Keaveney yesterday announced the
funding saying the work was vital to safeguard the
future life-saving efforts of the RNLI Swilly
Lifeboat.
"Having worked extensively on this with my Council
colleagues in Buncrana, the Department of Marine and
the RNLI volunteers, I'm pleased to announce this
funding which will enable works to begin to protect
the long term future of the lifeboat in Lough Swilly,"
said Deputy Keaveney. "The issue of the foreshore
lease has been agreed and is with the Chief States
Solicitors' Office. Marine Minister John Browne has
been in touch with them to highlight the urgency of
this, particularly as we are coming into the season
of increased marine leisure activity and therefore
increased risks of danger and accidents."
The Moville-based T.D., called on all parties
involved in this lease to "accept the conditions and
sign it with as little further delay as possible".
She said: "While I appreciate that the Council do
not wish to carry out continued dredging on a
sustained basis despite being granted an emergency
permit to do so in December 2006, I would ask that
works would begin immediately in light of my
announcement today."
