BUNCRANA could see the
return of the Scouts to coincide with the 100th
anniversary of Scouting Ireland next year.
Malin-based scout leader, Kevin Ferguson, said
interest had been expressed in starting up the
Scouts in the seaside town.
Kevin is the North West development support officer
for Scouting Ireland. He said he was delighted about
the approaches from Buncrana.
“There are already three very active Scout groups in
Inishowen at the moment in Carndonagh, Muff and
Quigley's Point.
"It would only be fitting that the largest town in
the peninsula should have one” he said.
“Scouting is a fantastic organisation to help young
people aged from six to 21 years, not only to enjoy
the scouting experience, but to have fun, meet new
friends, learn new skills, achieve goals and enjoy
the great outdoors."
A Scout group is made up of four sections - Beavers
aged six to eight years; Cubs aged eight to 11
years; Scouts aged 11 to16 years and Venture Scouts
aged 16 to 21 years. Scouting Ireland is a
cross-community organisation with around 40,000
members throughout the country.
Kevin explained that the biggest challenge would be
to get enough leaders to help out with the new
group.
"There are adults in the community who would be
willing to give one to two hours per week
voluntarily, but who might feel they may not possess
the skills to help.
“That's no problem. Any adult over the age of 18 who
would like to give it a go, would be given all the
training and help that they need to run a section,"
added Kevin.
“The beauty about Scouting is that because of the
different age ranges, a volunteer can join an age
section they feel they would enjoy working with. It
is more important to have an interest in helping
young people, than being able to tie a knot."

future for adults who may be interested in joining.
