RTE outing for Moville
musician
08.06.07
A Moville musician
enjoyed some national exposure recently when he got
to sing an original song on RTE's most listened to
radio programme.
Sean 'Hiboy' McLaughlin featured on RTE One's
Morning Ireland as part of his visit to Listowel
Writers' Week in Co. Kerry.
He was attending a song writing workshop led by Glen
Hansard of Irish band, The Frames, when RTE reporter
Cian McCormick invited him to be part of his radio
package for the next day. |

Sean, a regular
singer/guitarist around local bars including
Rawdon's in Moville, sang ‘You Told Me So’ to a
radio audience of more than 400,000 listeners.
"It was a great feeling and it all happened so fast
there was no time to get nervous about it," he
laughed.
Sean said the highlight, however, of his visit to
Listowel Writers' Week was when he was invited on
stage in St. John’s Theatre by Hansard who was
performing a solo concert there as part of the
festival.
He once again played ‘You Told Me So’ to the delight
of the packed house. |
"People were congratulating me afterwards. It
really was a musical highlight for me to date.
‘My cheeks are still sore from grinning about it. If
someone had told me on Wednesday that by the end of
Friday night I’d have sung on the radio and been
asked by Glen Hansard to play onstage with him, I’d
have thought they were wired to the moon."
Encouraged by his recent experience, Sean is now
thinking of recording some of his own songs. "It
just shows you what’s possible when you put yourself
out there and try new things. That was one of the
great things about the workshop in that you had 15
people of all ages and walks of life taking time out
to try something different.
"As one girl put it, it was like therapy only more
fun. I couldn't recommend the festival and workshops
highly enough to anybody thinking of giving it a go.
"It was a great confidence booster and for me now, I
hope to record a few tunes and see what happens from
there - although I think I’ll be working for a while
yet.” |
