Christmas comes early for
Dunree

Gleneely...3 (Adrian Duffy 2, Hugh Kelly) Dunree...9 (Neil Moran, Sean Baldrick 3, Paddy Toland 2, David Cassidy, Thomas Mulhern, Martin Breslin) By Liam Porter, Inishowen Independent, at Gleneely Christmas came early for Dunree Reserves on Sunday morning when they cruised to a win over Gleneely Reserves in a one sided encounter on a bitterly cold day. The game had barely got into a stride when the visitors went ahead with a goal from Neil Moran in the 3rd minute, the young striker reacting quickly to a free from Frank Kelly and lifting the ball over the advancing John Paul Houten in the home goal. Three minutes later they added to their lead. Young Stephen McLaughlin who had an impressive game for Dunree split the home defence with a great pass and Sean Baldrick nipped in for his first of the day. However Gleneely were back in the game after 12 minutes when Adrian Duffy beat the offside trap and lifted the ball over Rodger McGilloway and it looked for a while as if we might have a real game on our hands. |

But Dunree hit back within
five minutes and once again Stephen McLaughlin was in
the thick of things. Another excellent pass from the
youngster carved Gleneely open and found Paddy Toland
and when he fired in a cross to the back post, Baldrick
was on hand to slam home from six yards. By the 24th minute Baldrick had completed his hat-trick, the Dunree striker pouncing on a loose ball in the box following a free kick to slam home to make it 4-1. Gleneely had no answer to the visitors and fell further behind just before the half hour mark. A good build up on the right between Thomas Mulhern and Stephen McLaughlin eventually saw the ball worked to Paddy Toland and he fired home from the edge of the box to make it 5-1. 35th minute when Adrian
Duffy crossed from the right to William Hutchinson, but
his spectacular scissors kick was well saved by
McGilloway. Three minutes later they had cut the defecit when a great ball through by Shane Diver found Duffy and he produced a neat left-foot finish to close the gap between the sides. Kevin Doherty fired in a long range strike on the stroke of half time as the home side pressed for another, but his effort was well blocked and Dunree had a chance to regroup again before the break. That allowed the visitors to compose themselves again for the second half and they started the second half as they did the first with a goal inside three minutes. This time a corner from the right by Moran was flicked on by Paddy Toland and Thomas Mulhern stole in at the back post to drill the ball into the net to make it 6-2. |

At that stage the visitors were starting to enjoy some
excellent possession and youngsters Stephen McLaughlin,
Neil Moran, Thomas Mulhern and Daniel McGeoghegan were
combining well to produce some free flowing football. However it was from set plays that they continued to cause trouble for Gleneely and they extended their lead in the 69th minute when David Cassidy rose highest in the box to power in a header from Moran’s corner. At the other end McGilloway saved well from Hugh Kelly in the 77th minute while a minute later Dunree added to their tally when substitute Martin Breslin headed home from close range following another corner. Hugh Kelly raced down the
left and fired under McGilloway with two minutes left on
the clock. Even then Dunree could and perhaps should have added a tenth in the last seconds. Houten made a good save initially to deny Toland a hat-trick and somehow McLaughlin blazed the rebound over the bar from just two yards. It might have rounded things off nicely for the visitors but the home side will at least be glad that they didn’t succumb to double figures and no doubt will look to bounce back in the weeks ahead.
