Carndonagh’s Reserves cruised to the Division Three Reserve League title this afternoon with an emphatic 1-11 to 1-2 win over a Convoy side who never managed a real threat against the Inishowen men.
Carn certainly had the best of the opening exchanges and with Robert McCartney looking very sharp in front of goal in the first half, they made the best of the chances that came their way.
McCartney scored with a free in the first minute but Convoy almost hit back right away and Shane Gibbons was alert to cut out a ball to Gary Harvey in the opening minute as Convoy looked to hit back with a goal.
And there was a goal chance at the other end as well in the opening few minutes when a shot from Niall McGuinness brought a good save from Brian Kelly.
The impressive McGuinness easily beat Paul Lynch in the 8th minute and bore down on goal, but again his shooting let him down and he shot weakly at Kelly.
However McCartney was in much more lethal form when chances came his way and he scored a free in the 9th minute to extend Carn’s lead and pointed with another free in the 14th minute as the Inishowen side extended the lead further.
It must be said they were helped by some poor finishing from a Convoy side who fired a couple of shots into the grateful hands of Shane Gibbons and the Convoy men didn’t raise a flag until the 17th minute when Mark Monaghan scored from play.
However Robert McCartney’s 19th minute free soon had Carn back three points ahead and a great point from play from Darragh McLaughlin in the 21st minute made it 5 points to one in Carn’s favour.
And it stayed that way until the break largely thanks to an excellent stop from Gibbons just before the break.
A superb move from Convoy, easily their best passage of play in the game saw Michael Rodgers split the Carn defence with a great pass but Emmett Kelly saw his goalward shot pushed onto the bar by the Carn keeper and the defence got back en masse to prevent Convoy getting anything from the rebound.
Carn Captain Martin Mooney then scored three minutes after the re-start and it looked as if the cruise would continue into the second half but Convoy were right back in the game two minutes later when Liam Prunty prodded a long ball from Seamus O’Donnell into the net to make it 0-6 to 1-1.
But that was as good as it got for Convoy and Richard Cunningham hit the net for Carndonagh three minutes later with an excellent goal set up by Niall McGuinness and after that they never looked back.
Michael Rodgers scored Convoy’s last with a point ten minutes into the half and Carndonagh then cruised to victory.
Points from Mooney, Paul Doherty, Niall McGuinness and Liam Shields helped the Carn men on their way to a comfortable win against a Convoy side who had nothing to offer in return.
Had it been a boxing match it would have been stopped to prevent further punishment, but even a late altercation on the sideline involving the Convoy boss wasn’t going to stop this contest or indeed stop Carndonagh from taking the reserve title in style.
