Inishowen teens get 'Tuned In'
08.11.07
TEENS and young adults
from Inishowen recently got the chance to
participate in a unique project promoting peace
through music. |
|
The 'Tuned In - Peace
through Music' camp took place over five days at the
Gartan Outdoor Education Centre and encouraged
youngsters, both from musical and non-musical
backgrounds and from Donegal, Derry and Tyrone, to
take part.
"Throughout the five-day residential programme,
these groups worked together as one ensemble to
rehearse a work commissioned specially for the
project and to also create their own distinct piece
of music from what they |
learned and
experienced," explained a spokesperson.
Throughout, the participants engaged in
team/orchestra building through the excellent
facilities offered by the Gartan Outdoor Education
Centre. The aim was for the students to share
information about their backgrounds and experiences
in a relaxed and uninhibited environment, free of
peer pressure. |
The non-musicians
taking part, worked with Lorna McLaughlin of The
Henry Girls and the Inishowen Gospel Choir and music
therapist Jo McAuley. The young musicians,
meanwhile, worked with composer/conductor, Vincent
Kennedy who has previously written and commissioned
work on the peace and reconciliation theme. |
|
The project, funded by
the EU Programme for Peace and Reconciliation in
Northern Ireland and the Border Region, culminated
in a great performance at a packed Regional Cultural
Centre in Letterkenny on October 29.
