THE Inishowen Deanery
has a newly elected Vicar Forane in the person of
Carndonagh parish priest, Fr. Seamus Farrelly.
As Vicar Forane, Fr. Farrelly, 71, will have limited
jurisdiction over all the clergy in the peninsula by
order of the Bishop of Derry, Most Rev. Seamus
Hegarty.
He is now the most senior priest in the deanery, a position
previously held by Fr. George McLaughlin, who has
retired as parish priest of Moville at the age of
75.
Fr. Farrelly told InishowenNews.com he was
Vicar Forane by virtue of the fact he is now the
eldest priest on the peninsula.
His new appointment comes as part of one of the
biggest shake-ups of the Derry Diocese.
Bishop Hegarty has announced the creation of four
new parishes with effect from August 17th, 2007.
They are St. Mary’s, Derry, Our Lady of Lourdes,
Derry, Holy Family, Derry and the Parish of the Three
Patrons, Derry, which is made up of the existing
mensal parishes of St. Patrick’s, Pennyburn, with
the exception of Coshquin which becomes part of Holy
Family, St Brigid’s, Carnhill and St. Joseph’s
Galliagh.
Meanwhile, Buncrana-born Fr. Neil Farren, curate in
Omagh, will be inducted as parish priest of Ardmore,
Derry, this evening at 7.30pm by Bishop Francis
Lagan. After studies at St. Patrick’s College
Maynooth, Fr. Farren was ordained to the priesthood
on April 1st, 1979. He served as curate in
Glendermott (Waterside), Coleraine and Omagh. For
