Violence affects
many women in Donegal North East but they need more
help and support, Labour Party candidate Siobhan
McLaughlin has said.
She made her comments this week at the launch of the
'Why Women Should Vote Labour' campaign.
The Buncrana born candidate said women in the Labour
Party had consistently campaigned on the issue.
She said: "One in five women continue to experience
domestic violence, yet frontline services are
under-funded and emergency accommodation often is
not there or is not appropriate.
"The Labour Party is demanding vast improvements in
both services for victims of domestic violence and
in the judicial process where conviction rates for
these offences are extremely low."
The Labour Party proposals were set out in the
Labour Women's 'Safety, Accountability,
Responsibility' document published last December.
"I am determined to continue to highlight this
important issue on behalf of all those women who
suffer domestic violence," added Ms. McLaughlin. "We
have the track record to show that Labour is the
party for women. Women now have to make sure their
vote is a vote to make their voices heard."
