Organisers of a new
pilot scheme for people made redundant and in need
of new skills are seeking participants in Inishowen.
FAS and the Department for Employment and Learning
in Northern Ireland have jointly developed Workforce
21, a training programme for people who have been
made redundant and wish to upgrade or develop their
skills.
It is a 14-week pilot programme focusing on the
North West.
It has already been successfully completed in
Donegal Town and Ballyshannon by 80 participants.
The organisers said people in receipt of benefits
including one parent families needn't worry about
their entitlements as a training allowance,
childcare and travel allowance will be paid.
Training in a range of skills will be delivered to
prepare participants for working in a number of
"growth areas" including information technology,
leisure and tourism, catering, retail, caring and
childcare, among others.
Subjects to be covered will include customer care;
business; interview skills; literacy and numeracy;
communications; CV preparation; health & safety;
assertiveness; team building; computing and the
jobsearch environment.
The course is being co-ordinated by Muintearas Thir
Chonaill in Gweedore who intend bringing it to the
Buncrana area in the near future.
Muintearas Thir Chonaill manager, Jimmy Boyle said a
minimum of 20 people was needed for the course to go
ahead.
"The course would be particularly suitable for
people who lost their jobs after many years such as
those who were made redundant from Fruit of the Loom
in Buncrana. Many of the workers went into Fruit of
the Loom when they were 15 or 16 years old and
stayed for up to 20 years. It's very difficult when
you find yourself unemployed after that length of
time."
