Footage of two teenage
girls brawling on Buncrana's Main Street were
swiftly removed from the YouTube website yesterday
following local condemnation.
The youth who posted the film of the teens was
forced to remove the footage after details of the
fight were revealed in the 'Inishowen Independent'
newspaper.
The young cameraman, who is understood to have
captured the brawl on his camera phone, also closed
his YouTube account.
The 'Inishowen Independent' article prompted much
debate on local radio yesterday with Buncrana
councillors roundly condemning both the fight itself
and the international airing of it on YouTube. Cllr.
Padraig MacLochlainn said the incident painted a
'disturbing picture' while his Town Council
colleague Cllr. Nicholas Crossan welcomed the
removal of the footage from the website.
Cllr. Crossan said he hoped to arrange a meeting
with the local Garda superintendent shortly to
discuss matters of anti-social behaviour among some
youths in the town.
"Buncrana is no different from any other town and
unfortunately these things are happening. But there
is a bad element and they seem to be giving Buncrana
a bad name," he said.
He said parents should endeavour to know where there
children are, who they are with and what they are up
to.
"All we can do is try and guide our children as best
we can. I know it's a very difficult thing to
achieve but if we try and keep a better eye on our
teenagers, things might improve," he added.
The disturbing footage, filmed in broad daylight in
a local alleyway, was posted last week on YouTube.
An estimated 3,000 people had viewed the footage
before it was removed. |
